Nick is a widely recognized expert in impact, process, and market research studies. Nick has worked in the energy and energy related fields since 1978 and brings a broad range of experience to working with organizations and agencies involved in research, marketing, and evaluation. Early in his career, he managed market and energy products research projects for the Illinois Department of Energy and Natural Resources. He directed research for the Illinois Energy Efficient Procurement Program, designed and directed energy services evaluation research for US Department of Energy programs and conducted management and operational studies for the department when he served as the agency's Senior Management Operations Analyst. He also managed the development and implementation of the Illinois Alcohol Fuels Program. 

In 1992, Nick joined Hagler, Bailly Consulting in Madison, Wisconsin, as a Senior Manager. In this capacity he planned, directed, managed, and conducted $4.5 million worth of evaluation and market research on energy products, programs and services for Hagler, Bailly. He also served as an advisor to Consumer Energy's energy program research activities. From 1994 to 1995 Nick served as a full-time contractor for Consumer Energy’s energy research activities, planning, and implementing research on a wide range of energy programs and services.

Nick was the original founder and is currently a member and corporate agent for the International Energy Program Evaluation Conference. This 501(c)(3) conference presents energy services evaluation studies and provides training to energy service research professionals with specific tracks focused on energy markets and products. He was also the founder and publisher of ENR Targets, a monthly energy services marketing newsletter. In this capacity he conducted and published highly respected and often cited works on the behavior of energy markets and the impacts of energy products and services on customers and product markets. Very early in his career, Nick’s work as an energy efficiency researcher won him a Recommendation to the Congress and the President as having the most innovative energy analysis program in the United States. He has served on a wide number of boards, panels, and committees pertaining to energy services research. Nick holds a BA in Biological Science and an MA in Environmental Science, both from the University of Illinois at Springfield.

Mary is the Office Manager and Support Services Manager for the office of TecMarket Works. She is responsible for all office operations and environmental conditions. Mary provides support services to the professional research staff and is a key member of the research team and insures the timely production of all deliverables to clients.

Johna Roth                                                        Email:

Ms. Roth is an evaluation consultant with TecMarket Works and is experienced in energy and environmental program evaluation, low-income program evaluation, and in the field of non-energy benefits research. Ms. Roth has led and conducted arrearage and impact studies, primarily using analytical tools such as SPSS and PRISM™. Ms. Roth’s Masters degree is in Land Resources with a graduate level certificate in energy studies from the University of Wisconsin – Madison. Prior to entering graduate school, she worked with the Midwest Renewable Energy Association for five years in a variety of capacities, leaving her with a broad range of skills and knowledge in the energy field. Her BS degree is in Public Administration and Policy Analysis with minors in Natural Resource Management and Economics from the University of Wisconsin – Stevens Point, where she graduated with honors in 1997. She is currently the treasurer of the Association of Energy Service Professionals, Wisconsin Chapter, and is the founder and registrar of a community garden on Madison's east side.

Ms. Best has five years of energy efficiency evaluation experience and has worked on a wide range of evaluation efforts.  With TecMarket Works, Ms. Best has conducted and assisted in process and impact evaluation, qualitative and quantitative data collection and analysis, non-energy benefits, baseline and market analysis, and theory and logic model development for clients such as the California Public Utilities Commission, Southern California Edison, Hydro Québec, National Grid, NSTAR, and the Northwest Energy Efficiency Alliance.   Ms. Best leads the TecMarket Works market transformation evaluation of the Northwest Energy Efficiency Alliance’s Building Operations Initiative.  Ms. Best is a key player on the TecMarket Works California Master Evaluation Contractor Team and has assisted with several evaluation projects for the State of California.  Her key projects have included producing a summary report of program evaluation efforts and results for both the 2002-03 and the 2004-05 program years; process evaluation of the Peer Advisory and Peer Review Group requirements for 2006-08 utility portfolio development; database development and maintenance for managing the evaluation efforts of over 200 programs, and as a member of the 2006-08 Portfolio Review Team reviewed $2.5 billion worth of utility efficiency programs for approval by the CPUC. 

Prior to joining TecMarket Works, Ms. Best was a research assistant with PA Consulting Group, where she designed and implemented a rural economic impact evaluation of Wisconsin’s Focus on Energy program and assisted with several other evaluation efforts including the statewide economic impact, emissions savings estimates, and measurement and verification. 

Ms. Best holds a Master of Science degree from the Institute of Environmental Studies and the Energy Analysis and Policy program at University of Wisconsin-Madison.  Ms. Best is located in Albany, California.

 

Kim Leal 

Kim is a Survey Researcher with TecMarket Works. Ms. Leal has conducted thousands of energy, market transformation, market effects and program impact surveys for TecMarket Works. Ms. Leal was the lead survey researcher for the 1997 – 1999 US DOE FEMP market transformation studies. Prior to working for TecMarket Works, Ms. Leal was a survey researcher for Hagler Bailly Consulting in Madison, Wisconsin, where she conducted survey research for numerous energy program and market effects evaluations.
